Manta Point Komodo

Table of Contents

Just off the coast of Komodo Island, this shallow, current-swept channel is where dozens of manta rays gather to feed, and where divers and snorkelers can get a unique opportunity to swim with these gentle giants.

Manta Point (sometimes called Karang Makassar) is one of the most iconic marine sites in Komodo. With its crystal visibility, plankton-rich waters, and thriving coral beds, it’s a biological buffet for filter-feeding rays—and a front-row seat for anyone lucky enough to visit.

What Makes Manta Point So Special?

First, the obvious: the mantas. Reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi) are frequent visitors here, often seen in groups of 5 to 20, gliding effortlessly through the currents. These majestic creatures can span up to 5 meters across and are known for their curiosity, often circling divers and snorkelers in elegant loops.

But Manta Point isn’t only Mantas. Its healthy coral gardens and gently sloping reefs also attract:

  • Green and hawksbill turtles
  • Eagle rays
  • Reef sharks
  • Giant trevallies
  • Cuttlefish
  • And more micro-marvels than your GoPro can handle

Currents here can be strong, a key reason mantas flock to the site, so guides are essential. But for experienced divers and confident snorkelers, this is a must visit on any Komodo trip.
